Give Thanks in All Circumstances

by | Nov 24, 2020 | Faith, Women

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT)

The Bible reminds us many times to be thankful no matter what is happening in life. Are you grateful during the difficult times in your life? I thought I could answer yes to that question, but then 1993 arrived with my third pregnancy. And in September of that year, our son was born and died a few days later. I questioned if I could ever be thankful again in my life. Did God expect me to thank Him for the loss of my son? My faith was on the line as I pondered these events and my relationship with Christ.

I spend time in prayer during those dark days. I sought out Godly women who could help me sort out my feelings. I took the words of Colossians 4:2 (NIV) to heart; “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” At first, my words felt insincere, but I kept seeking God as I wrestled with the grief I felt. But, slowly, my words moved from my mind to my heart, and I began to trust God once again.

Relearning Thankfulness

In my studies, I also noticed a common saying throughout the Psalms; “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.” And as time wore, I found out the truth of these words. In 1997, I went on my first mission trip as a memorial to my son. And I wanted to thank God for His hand in my life. Over the next twenty years, God showed me how His plan for my life. God revealed to me how I could help poor and neglected children in His world. He showed me how I could be His hands and feet to other children that needed help. And since that first trip, I continue to care for orphans in Myanmar and Nepal.

God provided me with something more than just death and depression. In this new purpose, God gave me hope and a purpose amid my pain. He blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. He taught me to be thankful in all circumstances because I can trust Him with my future. God can do the same for you too. No matter your circumstances, trust God, and thank Him always. Remember Psalm 106:1 (NIV); “Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” May the Lord bless you and keep you always.

What circumstance in your life causes you not to want to thank God? What steps can you take today to start to move your heart towards thankfulness?
