Perfect Love Prevails Over Fear

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” ~ 1 John 4:18

The Depth of Love

Most of us have heard about the love of God, whether you’ve been in church your whole life or just became a believer. We’ve heard John 3:16 quoted many times, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We just celebrated Easter last week which is a commemoration of God’s sacrificial and unconditional love for us through the finished work of Jesus on the cross.

There’s no greater demonstration of how intensely God loves us than sending his only son to lay down his life for us.

John 15:13 tells us that, “no one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.” (CSB)

A Glimpse

I don’t think we would ever fully comprehend the depth of God’s love for us on this side of heaven. But we get a glimpse of his love when we become a parent. When I became a mom, I never knew I could love someone so much it hurts. I love my children deeply.

And to think, the love we have for our children doesn’t even come close to the love of God for us; it’s incredible. We only get a glimpse of God’s love for us through the eyes of our own love for our children.

The apostle Paul says “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ~ Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)

Love Drives Out Fear

As a mom, most of us would be willing to give our own lives to save our child. A mother’s love is selfless and sacrificial. We would do anything for our children because we want the best for them.

If we could protect our children from all the dangers, failures, struggles and pain that come with living in a fallen world, we would.

What about God who loves us even more than we love our own children?

Jesus says in Matthew 7:9-11, “which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

When you know how much God loves you, fear, anxiety and worry about the future, the unknown and uncertainties that are beyond your control, can no longer paralyze or crush you.

You can rest assured that your heavenly Father who loves you beyond measure, wants nothing less than his best plans for your life.

“For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” ~ Jeremiah 29:11 (AMP)

Fear doesn’t stand a chance when we stand in His love.
