For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)
After my mom died, we cleaned out her apartment. I put her essential paperwork in a safe place in case I needed it. But, when I needed it, I could not find it anywhere. I searched everywhere as I tore the room apart. Finally, I found it behind a desk. The event reminded me of the story of the Lost Coin in the Bible and how God pursues us with His Grace.
Grace
Webster’s Dictionary defines grace as follows: “(in Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.” Grace is a free and unmerited gift from God. Sometimes, I believe we do not fully grasp the beauty and significance of God’s grace in our lives.
As humans, we try to extend grace to those around us. But, we fail miserably because of our broken and sinful nature. Since we are incapable of giving grace perfectly, we cannot understand God’s perfect grace. He died for our sins, freeing us from the sting of death forever. Christ also welcomes us back to Himself each time we sin and repent.
Ephesians 4:7 “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.”
We learn many other things from this gift of unmerited grace. We discover these additional concepts because of grace. We can offer them to those around us: mercy, forgiveness, charity, compassion, favor, generosity, tenderness, goodwill, and pardon. Grace frees us from our sins and teaches us how to treat others. It is the gift that keeps on giving as we grow in His grace.
Hebrew 4:16 “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
The grace of our Lord Jesus allows Him to love us despite our sins, even the ones hidden deep in our hearts. Nothing we do can earn this gift of grace. His gift is perfect and baffling at the same time. But without grace, we would be lost forever.
Pray
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your unmerited gift of grace in our lives. When we feel lost in our sins, please forgive us with your perfect grace. Remind us to ask for your forgiveness daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen
